Lysosomes and Endocytosis
Lysosomes are membrane-enclosed cytoplasmic
organelles with a diameter of 0.05–0.5
μm. They contain awide variety of active hydrolytic
enzymes (hydrolases) such as glycosidases,
sulfatases, phosphatases, lipases,
phospholipases, proteases, and nucleases (lysosomal
enzymes) in an acid milieu (pH about 5).
Lysosomal enzymes enter a lysosome by means
of a recognition signal (mannose 6-phosphate)
and a corresponding receptor.
