Insulin initiates its physiological effect by binding
to a receptor (insulin receptor). When
bound to insulin, the insulin receptor functions
as an enzyme and phosphorylates tyrosine in
the target proteins. This is the intracellular signal
for the metabolic processes induced by insulin.
